Follow These Tips For a Smooth Recovery After Restorative Dental Treatment

Posted .

If you are planning to receive restorative dental treatment in the near future, we can offer some excellent recovery tips to help you recover after the procedure. Naturally, our dentist will provide detailed post-op instructions after your treatment, but these tips should give you a good idea of what to expect with recovery.

Dental Fillings

Placing a dental filling is a fairly simple procedure that can be completed in a single visit. After receiving your filling, though, you should avoid hot and cold foods for a while or else the extreme temperatures can damage your new filling.

Dental Crowns

Don’t bite down on a new dental crown for at least an hour so that the cement bonding the crown to your tooth has enough time to harden. You should also avoid sticky sweets such as gum and taffy or else your crown can be pulled off. Tooth sensitivity for a few days after receiving a dental crown is normal.

Tooth Extraction

If you had a tooth removed, following some general rules will help the extraction site heal without incident. Reduce bleeding by keeping your mouth firmly closed to maintain pressure on the piece of gauze. Don’t smoke, use a pipe, or drink from a straw for the first 24 hours after surgery. Use ice packs periodically on the outer cheek to reduce swelling, but don’t apply them for longer than ten minutes at a time.
